From mid-pack runners to professional triathletes, we've had the opportunity to share a lot of stories and advice from vegan athletes on this podcast. But today's interview is a first.

I'm excited to share my conversation with vegan midfielder for the LA Galaxy, Baggio Husidic, about his diet, training, and how going plant-based is making him a better athlete.

It was traumatic. It was uncomfortable, painful, and frightening, and Matt loves to bring it up. Alright fine, maybe (now that's it's over) it's also a little funny.

Of course I'm talking about the groin story we've vaguely teased over the past month. Matt has finally convinced me is worth sharing on this podcast.

But while the story might start with the groin -- or actually a 50k ultramarathon -- it's about much more than that. The real story is about mindfulness, letting go of pain and discomfort, and how to handle an injury that leaves you unable to run.

That's the part of this dreaded, embarrassing story we want to share with you today.

Today we're excited to host Michael Greger, MD, the man behind NutrtionFacts.org and the author of the new book How Not to Die.

Michael's electrifying personality and scientific background attract a lot of attention, and we're happy to pick his brain on many of the big topics vegan athletes are most interested in.

You know winter has officially arrived when you contemplate skipping a run all together because you can't find your running tights.

That's what happened to me last week, and I have a feeling I wasn't the only one restlessly digging through a closet having that same internal conversation.

In today's episode, Matt and I share a survival guides of sorts on how to get through the cold winter months. We tackle everything from running through winter, indoor exercise for those that don't want to brave the elements, the foods and drinks we turn to, and using winter to set the stage for the coming year.

When I tell people that my wife and I are vegan, one of there first questions (after the whole protein question) is, "What about your kids?"

Of course my answer is yes ... for the most part.

In today's episode, we bring on Karen Ranzi, author of Creating Healthy Children, about this topic, and how she recommends raising your kids to eat healthy and love it.

Questions about protein have to be the most common for vegans. Where do you get it? Am I getting enough? Should I take protein supplements?

In today's episode, we sit down with Dr. Garth Davis, author of the new book Proteinaholic: How Our Obsession with Meat Is Killing Us and What We Can Do About It.

His unique take on protein helps to address those common questions, and the answers may just surprise you.

It's holiday season, which can only mean one thing: It's time for a holiday extravaganza!

In today's post, Doug and I cover all things holiday in one epic episode. We discuss how to handle awkward Thanksgiving dinners with non-vegan family, sticking to healthy habits when cookies are everywhere, and our go-to holiday meals, recipes, and adult beverages. We also share this year's gift guide, and which movies and music we'll enjoy to put us in the spirit.

It's a long episode, but definitely goes on the not-to-miss list!

Nov 19, 2015

Today we bring back on one of our most popular guests, Jeff Sanders, to talk about his new book The 5 AM Miracle. Jeff is all about waking up early, and using those morning hours to set up the rest of your day. The crazy thing is he's actually convinced me to do the same.

Nov 12, 2015

Today we're bringing back Ray Cronise, a good friend, and the guy behind some of the most interesting nutrition related research out there. We'll chat about his recent water fast, and the research behind his new book 'Our Broken Plate', which happens to be blowing up Kickstarter as we speak.

By now you've probably heard that my family and I spent most of the summer living at friend's houses after a flood destroyed ours. The uncomfortable living situation, lack of personal space, and wacky routine, meant healthy eating wasn't even on our radars.

Now, after a month in our new home, we've hit the reset button on our health. In today's episode, we share the 5 food habits my family and I reset first, and how you can stay on top of your health this holiday season.

Inspired by a listener question, we're breaking from the norm to discuss the business side of No Meat Athlete.

More specifically, how you can turn your ideas and passions into a movement or business through the internet.

Oct 22, 2015

Doug and I spent last weekend at the Runner's World Half and Festival in Bethlehem, PA. The races, people, and events were a total blast, but what stood out to both of us the most was a lunch chat with Deena Kastor. During that chat she talked about her struggle between juggling a career as an elite runner, and being a mother.

In today's episode, we discuss our own struggles between balancing the things we love, and what we can learn from Deena's approach.

Last week episode of No Meat Athlete Radio was all about running faster. This week we're exploring the other big improvement runners desire ... running farther.

Let's face it, a new distance is intimidating. Each new mile is uncharted territory.

How will it affect your body and mind? Do you need to eat or drink more while on the run? And how on Earth do you make time for all the training?

Our goal with today's episode is not only to answer those common questions, but provide you with a better understanding of how you can start running farther, and achieving your goals.

Oct 8, 2015

Wish you could run faster? I think we pretty much all do.

After my first marathon was a bust, I needed to improve by over 100 minutes in order to reach my Boston Qualifying goal. And you know what? I did it.

But it wasn't easy.

In today's episode, Doug and I discuss the common mistakes that keep runners from improving their running speed, and what steps and workouts will actually make you faster.

Oct 1, 2015

In today's episode, Doug and I bring back Sid Garza-Hillman, one of the most popular guests we've had on No Meat Athlete Radio. And of course, his charm doesn't disappoint.

We discuss meal planning, approaching the natural diet, ultrarunning, and showering. More specifically, why Sid doesn't shower.

This is one of those episodes you really don't want to miss.

Sep 24, 2015

It's part two of the great No Meat Athlete Radio Resource Guide, and this time it's all about running.

Motivation, training guides, books, movies, podcasts, you name it, we cover it in this week's episode.

Sep 17, 2015

Today we kick off part 1 of a 2-part resources guide! First up, resources for new vegans.

In today's episode co-host Doug and I share our favorite documentaries, podcasts, books, websites, and more, all geared towards new vegetarians or vegans.

Sep 14, 2015

If you've listened to the past few episodes, you know co-host Doug was headed into this past weekend's 50k ultramarathon under prepared, and that pain was expected.

Crying at mile 15, now that was unexpected.

Half way through Doug found himself faced with the decision to quit or dig deep and keep pushing, even when he didn't want to.

In today's episode, we recap that race, and discuss the challenging of knowing when it's best to give up, and when to continue moving forward.

Sep 10, 2015

For something so simple, running brands sure put out a lot of gear.

In today's episode, we wade through all the junk, and take a look at the running gear we actually use. We discuss our favorite shoes, clothing, recovery tools, hydration equipment, electronics, and oh so much more.

Sep 3, 2015

Several months ago, I announced my marathon comeback. My intention was to focus on the marathon distance for the first time since qualifying for Boston.

Fast forward to today, and instead of being in week 8 of an intense training cycle, I'm hardly running at all. I'm officially in a slump.

But you know what? I don't feel guilty about it.

For the first time -- maybe ever -- I'm not beating myself up for failing at my original goal. I'm at peace with this lack of motivation and training.

As it turns out, NMA Radio co-host Doug is dealing with his own running slump of sorts, only he's 1 week away from a 50k, and his training looks a lot different than mine.

In today's episodes, we talk about those slumps, what we're dealing with, and how we're embracing the lack of motivation instead of fighting it.

Aug 31, 2015

In today's episode, we answer your questions about food and fitness. We talk soy, peanuts, gluten, endurance, and more.

Aug 27, 2015

Can you believe it? 100 Episodes! Things started off a little rough, but we've officially hit our stride and the 100th episode.

In today's episode co-host Doug and I share some of the secrets behind this show, where we've struggled, and the lessons we've learned. We also look forward towards new ideas and changes coming in the next year.

Aug 24, 2015

Do vegans need to take supplements?

In today's episode, it's all about the supplements. Which you need (if any) on a whole foods plant-based diet, and what you're already getting naturally. Plus you'll get the low-down on what we take ourselves and why.

Aug 20, 2015

Today it's all about the staples.

For a new vegan, it's easy to find cookbooks and recipes that guide you through dinners, but what about a simple bowl of cereal, toast, or cup of tea?

With an increasingly large number of vegan substitutes available, it can feel overwhelming choosing the right vegan substitutes. Never mind knowing if your favorite bread or pasta is actually 100% plant-based.

Inspired by a listener question, co-host Doug and I dig deep into our pantries and refrigerators, and discuss the most common staples you'll find in our vegan kitchens.

When you wake up each morning, you're forced to take care of a number of "most-dos." You must take the kids to school, answer emails, and go to work, for example.

Most of us get so caught up in the most-dos that we neglect the important habits that could really shape our day. Habits for physical and mental health. Habits for happiness and gratitude.

Habits that only take a few minutes to do, but still get brushed aside.

In today's episode, Doug and I discuss our most important daily habits, and why we fight so hard to keep them.
